While Grand Case has our own L’Espérance Airport, a December 2012 social media poll puts St. Juliana International Airport (SXM) has been recognized as the top airport in the world thanks to its stunning landing. Our chief piece of St. Martin airport information: nowhere else in the world can you get so close to the variety of aircraft, anything from a 747 to a Twin Otter.
And if you’re planning travel to St. Martin, you should know that SXM is the main airport, although island hopping is possible via Grand Case’s L’Espérance.
As many readers here will know, the main runway for St. Juliana airport, located on the Dutch side of our beautiful island, lies just across across the street from popular Maho Beach. It’s so close that you can practically touch the jets as they come in for a landing (indeed, jet exhaust can sometimes cause injuries), but it’s a lot of fun:
The survey was conducted in December 2012, by PrivateFly.com, and survey results that recognized St. Juliana as the world’s number one airport were generated by website users and from social media invitations across a range of global websites. A panel of world-renowned experts in the travel and aviation industry chose a shortlist of the airports to be considered in the online poll and, according to PrivateFly.com, a total of 1,711 votes were received, with 83 different airports being nominated.
This is the third time in a row that SXM Airport has made the Top 10 in this annual survey of the most stunning landings in the world.
