And there’s plenty to do right now in March: Until April the village of Grand Case (our beautiful host community) hosts its own Mardis Gras, a festival that blends food, music local crafts and plenty of dancing. The main street of Grand Case is closed off to cars, in order to accommodate thousands of visitors who have come to enjoy the nightlife and celebrate living life on a beautiful Caribbean. Pre-carnival events start in January, the first Sunday after the Epiphany (which would be January 6th this year, in 2012), and continues until Ash Wednesday in February. There are parades every Sunday in Grand Case, featuring dancing and costumes by local groups in different communities of Saint Martin (from both the French and Dutch sides). St. Maarten, on the Dutch side of the island, hosts its own Mardi Gras carnival (visitors can freely travel between the Dutch and French halves of the island). The 2012 Carnival in St. Maarten features a balance of local and international events and are as follows: 10 local events and 4 international concerts, as well as 4 jump-ups and three parades. 4 of the 10 local events are pageants, with the Teen and Mature Queen Pageants being re-introduced by popular demand. Music includes Soca, Latin, Reggae, Dancehall, Hip Hop & R&B. Learn more about St. Martin Mardis Gras here.
